    CAPTAIN MAX PATTERSON'S STORY

Imagine this: you're one of the only small businesses left in your Manhattan neighborhood. Big-box stores are opening up all around you, but you're not going anywhere - not because you're stubborn, but because you don't need to. You've got all the business you need.

Meet Captain Max Patterson. He got his start as a professional sailor, practicing his carpentry skills both on and off the boats. And yes - he really is a captain. He spent so many years sailing that he eventually accrued enough sea time to earn the title. And it stuck!

Captain Max has worked on many of the hotels, stores and popular restaurants that have moved into his neighborhood. Other business owners rely on him for repairs and add-ons, always needed as soon as possible. He's worked with many of his clients for 20 years or more, and he often goes by and eats at the restaurants he helped build.

It takes a lot of chutzpah to be a small business here.

          Story 2

A lot of good woodwork has to be done by hand, says Captain Max. You can make something beautiful with your hands that a machine can't.

Craftsmanship is the result of time, attention to detail and many years of skill applied to whatever it may be that you're pursuing. It means finding the time to devote yourself to what you're good at - with a little bit of heart and love thrown in.

            Love your craft.
